A communication system has an analogue circuit and a digital circuit. When a signal is received by the system, the system performs an analogue to digital conversion to produce a digital signal and decodes the digital signal. It determines a signal index, such as the signal to noise ratio, from the decoded signal. The signal index is then used to adjust the power consumption of the analogue circuit or of a Viterbi circuit in the digital circuit. The Viterbi circuit may be enabled or disabled based on the index. Taps in an echo canceller or in a near end cross talk canceller in the analogue circuit may be enabled or disabled based on the index. The index may be compared with thresholds to determine how to adjust the power consumption. |
