Epoxides are prepared by reacting an olefinically unsaturated compound with an organic hydroperoxide in the liquid phase in the presence of a metal epoxidation catalyst selected from Ti, Cr, Nb, Zr, Te, Ta, Re and Ur. Ti catalysts are preferred. The catalysts may be added in the form of organic or inorganic compounds of the metals, preferably in a form which is initially soluble in the reaction solution, e.g. carboxylates, carbonyls and chelates. Specified hydroperoxides include alkyl, aralkyl, cycloalkyl and ketone hydroperoxides. Specified olefinic starting materials include olefins and unsaturated alcohols, ethers, esters, ketones and organic halides. It is preferred to operate at 50-120 DEG C. in the presence of an organic solvent. Examples relate to the preparation of cyclohexene oxide and propylene oxide. |
