Magnox, contaminated with radioactive cobalt, nickel, iron and manganese, is dissolved in bisulphate solution. The solution is doped with a known addition of non-radioactive cobalt and/or nickel, iron and manganese, with preferably an excess of Magnox being present. At the end of the dissolution, alloying constituents aluminium or zirconium precipitate but radioactive and non-radioactive cobalt, nickel, iron and manganese remain in solution. These are precipitated by the addition of an oxidising agent. After solids separation, the concentrations of radioactive cobalt, nickel, iron and manganese, in the residual aqueous phase, are greatly reduced. This aqueous effluent is then available for disposal to sea or similar. |
