The invention comprises compounds of formula where A is O or S; each of R1 and R2 is an alkyl, aryl or aralkyl radical (the last two being unsubstituted or substituted by one or more halogens or C1- 5 alkyl or C1- 5 alkoxy groups); each X is a halogen atom or an alkyl, alkoxy, nitro, haloalkyl or alkanamido radical, or, taken together, two X radicals on adjacent carbon atoms form a hydrocarbylene chain containing 3 or 4 carbons between its points of attachment; Y is an alkylene or haloalkylene radical and m is 0, 1, 2, 3 or 4, and salts, esters or amides thereof. The acids of Formula I are obtained by reacting a compound of formula with a compound R1-CO-CH2-CO-R2, in the presence of a catalyst and a water-immiscible solvent. Alternatively, a compound of formula may be reacted with a haloalkanoic acid or salt thereof, X1-Y1-COOM (where X1 is a halogen atom (e.g. Cl, Br or I) and Y1 is a methylene or trimethylene radical, optionally substituted by one or more alkyl groups or halogen atoms, M is H or a cation such as Na or K) or with a propiolactone of the formula where each R3 is H or C1- 5 alkyl, in the presence of a base, and the intermediate salt acidified to obtain the desired acid. The esters can be made by similar methods or by esterification of the acid. Alternatively, an appropriate aryloxy (or arylthio) alkanoic acid ester can be reacted with HCHO and HCl to form a chloromethyl aryloxy (or arylthio alkanoic ester which is treated with hexamethylene tetramine to form the formyl compound. 2 - (Hydroxy (or mercapto) benzylidene) - 1,3-diketones (III) are made by reacting an appropriate hydroxy (or mercapto)-substituted benzaldehyde with a diacylmethane R1COCH2COR2. 2,3 - Dichloro - 4 - hydroxybenzaldehyde is made by reacting 2,3-dichlorophenol with chloroform in the presence of a base and treating the product with HCl. Ethyl (2,3-dimethylphenoxy) acetate is made by reacting 2,3-dimethylphenol with ethylbromoacetate in the presence of K2CO3. Pharmaceutical compositions, useful as diuretic and saluretic agents, comprise acids of Formula I, non-toxic pharmacologically acceptable salts thereof, esters or amides, together with an inert carrier, diluent or coating in the form of a pill, tablet, capsule, elixir, syrup, or injectable solution or suspension.
