Disclosed is a white phosphor composed of a single material. The luminescent center of the white phosphor is an element other than Mn, and this white phosphor emits white light having excellent color rendering properties by near ultraviolet excitation. Specifically disclosed is a white phosphor characterized by being represented by the following formula: SraSbMgcZndSieO f:Eu2+ (wherein when e = 1, 0 < (c + d)/(a + c + d) <= 0.2, 1.8 <= a + c + d <= 2.2, 0 <= b/(b + f) <= 0.07, and 3.0 <= b + f <= 4.4). Preferably, the white phosphor is represented by the following chemical formula: (SrO1-ESE)x .(Mg1-FZnFO)y (SiO2)z:Eu2+ (wherein 4.5 <= x/y <= 27.5, 3 <= z/y <= 14.5, 0 <= E <= 0.3, and 0 <= F <= 0.7).
