These are described biphenylene compounds of formula (I) wherein R<SUB>1 </SUB>is a C<SUB>1</SUB>-C<SUB>18</SUB>alkyl, C<SUB>2</SUB>-C<SUB>18</SUB>alkenyl, C<SUB>6</SUB>-C<SUB>10</SUB>aryl or C<SUB>6</SUB>-C<SUB>10</SUB>aryl or C<SUB>6</SUB>-C<SUB>10</SUB>heteroaryl radical each unsubstituted or mono- or poly-substituted by hydroxy, halogen, C<SUB>1</SUB>-C<SUB>18</SUB>alkyl, C<SUB>1</SUB>-C<SUB>18</SUB>alkoxy, amino, C<SUB>1</SUB>-C<SUB>5</SUB>monoalkyamino or by di-C<SUB>1</SUB>-C<SUB>5</SUB>alkylamino; C<SUB>5</SUB>-C<SUB>7</SUB>cycloalkyl or C<SUB>5</SUB>-C<SUB>7</SUB>cycloalkenyl each unsubstituted or substituted by C<SUB>1</SUB>-C<SUB>5</SUB>alkyl; -OR'; or NR'R''; R<SUB>2 </SUB>is a C<SUB>1</SUB>-C<SUB>18</SUB>alkyl, C<SUB>2</SUB>-C<SUB>18</SUB>alkenyl, C<SUB>6</SUB>-C<SUB>10</SUB>aryl or C<SUB>6</SUB>-C<SUB>10</SUB>heteroaryl radical each unsubstituted or mono- poly-substituted by hydroxy, hadroxy, C<SUB>1</SUB>-C<SUB>18</SUB>alkoxy, amino, C<SUB>1</SUB>-C<SUB>5</SUB>monoalkylamino or by di-C<SUB>1</SUB>-C<SUB>5</SUB>alkylamino; -OR'; -NR'R''; or R<SUB>1 </SUB>and R<SUB>2 </SUB>together form a 5- to 7- membered monocyclic carbocyclic or heterocyclic ring; R<SUB>3 </SUB>is hydrogen; C<SUB>1</SUB>-C<SUB>6</SUB>alkyl or C<SUB>1</SUB>-C<SUB>6</SUB>alkoxy; R' and R'' are each independently of the other hydrogen; unsubstituted or mono- or poly-hydroxy-, halo-, C<SUB>1</SUB>-C<SUB>18</SUB>alkyl-, C<SUB>1</SUB>-C<SUB>18</SUB>alkoxy-, amino- or quaternary ammonium groupsubstituted C<SUB>1</SUB>-C<SUB>18</SUB>alkyl, C<SUB>5</SUB>-C<SUB>7</SUB>cycloalkyl or phenyl; and n is 0 or 1; wherein, when R<SUB>2 </SUB>is OR' or NR'R'' and n=1, R<SUB>1 </SUB>is not simultaneously OR'; or NR'R''. The compounds according to the invention are suitable especially as sun protection agents in cosmetic, pharmaceutical and veterinary medicine preparations.
