Respiratory apparatus comprises an injector with nozzle, a gas supply duct leading to the upstream side of the nobble for supplying thereto nutrient gas under pressure, a by-pass duct leading from the gas supply duct to the downstream side of the nozzle and thus bypassing the nozzle, a first closure device in the by-pass duct and closable to prevent flow of the nutrient gas from the supply duct to said downstream side by way of the by-pass duct, a branch duct leading towards the ambient atmosphere from the by-pass duct at a location intermediate the first closure device and said downstream side, and a second closure device in the branch duct closable to prevent flow of the ambient air to the by-pass duct by way of the branch duct. As illustrated, gas (for example oxygen) is supplied from container 1 via conduit 2, pressure regulator valve 3, conduit 4, fork 5 and conduit 6 to pressure nozzle 7 of the injector. Air is inspired into the mixing nozzle 12 of the injector via aperture 13, which preferably has an opening of adjustable cross-section and is adapted to be closed by a valve disc, for example constructed as a hand wheel 14, associated with a screwthreaded spindle 15. On closure of the air inspiration aperture, spring-loaded closure disc 10 is simultaneously lifted from its seat, thereby opening aperture 11 to allow gas to flow to the mixing nozzle of the injector via conduit 8 and throttling element 9, which is situated in the by-pass,gas flow path between the injector and the air inspiration aperture and which is preferably so dimensioned that the quantity of gas flowing therethrough at operating pressure, corresponds to the quantity of air which would be inspired through the air inspiration aperture by the injector at the same operating pressure.
