PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an organic electroluminescent (EL) element with high external quantum efficiency and excellent driving durability. SOLUTION: The electroluminescent element holds at least luminescent layers between a pair of electrodes, where the luminescent layers are divided into at least three layers in the thickness direction, including a first luminescent layer close to an anode; a third luminescent layer close to a cathode; and a second luminescent layer positioned between the first and third luminescent layers.
