The device has multiple fitting parts, one of which is fixed on an auto body and the other on a door or flap. A braking and holding element (10) brings a release position and enables a relative movement of the fitting parts with each other. Friction surfaces are held in a force application position through a friction body by a closed magnetic flux (M). The material of the friction body has a reversible ferromagnetic characteristic. The magnetic flux also remains after switching off the magnetic field produced by a coil (13) but is cancelled by applying a counter magnetic field. An independent claim is also included for a braking or clutch device for door hinge.
