PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a failure detector for a resolver, which is improved in the precision of failure detection. SOLUTION: A step wave voltage source 12 and a switch SW1 impress a step wave voltage to an electric circuit constituting the resolver 2, in failure detection circuits 10, 11; a voltage monitor 13 detects a step wave response voltage from the electric circuit constituting the resolver 2 with respect to the step wave voltage impressed by the step wave voltage source 12; and the voltage monitor 13 draws out the resistance and a reactance of the electric circuit constituting the resolver 2, based on a waveform of the step wave response voltage, and detects a failure of the resolver 2, based on the resistance and the reactance. The failure of the resolver 2 is precisely detected thereby by detecting an increase or decrease of the resistance or the reactance, and a kind of the failure is also determined.
