<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical device having low polarization dependence and an optical head device using the same. <P>SOLUTION: A liquid crystal lens device 21 has: a liquid crystal layer 29, disposed in between a first transparent substrate 22 and a second transparent substrate 23, and a first electrode layer 24 and a second electrode layer 26, respectively arranged in between these transparent substrates and the liquid crystal layer 29. The liquid crystal layer 29 is constituted of a liquid crystal composition containing a uniaxial liquid crystal and a biaxial liquid crystal, where the liquid crystal composition satisfies inequality: 0.8≤(¾n<SB>x1</SB>-n<SB>y1</SB>¾a)/(¾n<SB>y2</SB>-n<SB>z2</SB>¾b)≤1.2, where (a) represents the content (mol%) of the one liquid crystal in a birefringent material, and (b) represents the content (mol%) of the other liquid crystal in the birefringent material, respectively. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2008,JPO&INPIT |
