PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compact type air pump having a small volume and being designed to be conveniently portable, in particular, for forcing gas into an air filled object such as a tire. SOLUTION: The first end of a cylinder is provided with an inlet hole and the second end is closed. An air supply channel is provided in an air supply rod passing through its axial direction. A piston device has a piston provided at the second end of the air supply rod and a check valve device provided between the second end of the air supply rod and the piston. The piston and the second end of the air supply rod are inserted into the cylinder, and a center hole and a through-hole are provided in the piston. A head portion is provided at the first end of the air supply rod, and an air nozzle connector is provided on the head portion. When the cylinder is moved relative to the air supply rod in the direction of leaving the head portion, air flows from a vent hole of an upper cover into the cylinder and from the through-hole of the piston into the bottom end of the cylinder, while the air is prevented from flowing out of the center hole by the check valve device. When the cylinder is moved relative to the air supply rod in the direction of head portion, air at the bottom end of the cylinder flows from the center hole to the air supply channel of the air supply rod and then flows out of the head portion and the air nozzle connector.
