PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a novel tungsten oxide fiber and to provide its production method. SOLUTION: The tungsten oxide fiber is a tungsten oxide fiber comprising a tungsten oxide and has an edge length of 1 nm to 500μm, a long axis direction length of 5 nm to 10,000μm, and an aspect ratio in the range of 5 to 300 and is characterized in that the constituent atoms are arranged regularly in the c axis direction. The method for producing the tungsten oxide fiber comprises heating a tungsten oxide or an alloy of tungsten to 1,200-3,000°C in a gas-phase oxidizing atmosphere prepared by mixing an oxidation promoter with an oxidation inhibitor and allowing the formed tungsten oxide to grow on a substrate.
