The present invention relates to a wheelchair for handicapped persons characterised in that it comprises a chassis formed by a pair of tubular frames, a seat which has an opening to allow the handicapped person to perform physiological necessities without leaving the wheelchair; a reclinable backrest which enables the user to lie back and in turn serves as a support when the person is standing; a rigid backrest used to reinforce the reclinable backrest which is detachable; a lifting system which aids the user to stand up; a traction system for moving the handicapped person whether seated or standing; a leg-rest which mainly and ergonomically secures the front part of the knees during lifting and and when standing; a pair of "forks" which reinforce the wheelchair and various hinged connections used for folding the wheelchair; a hinged footrest which houses the front wheels and a pair of brakes which immobilise the wheelchair when the user is going to sit down or stand up therefrom.
