<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polymer electrolyte fuel cell which has less changes in battery performance even under high humid condition and low humid condition and has a high robustness. <P>SOLUTION: The polymer electrolyte fuel cell is provided with a solid polymer electrolyte membrane 3, a catalyst layer 5 arranged respectively on both sides of the solid polymer electrolyte membrane, a gas diffusion layer 6 respectively arranged at the outside of the catalyst layer 5, and a separator 2 respectively arranged at the outside of the gas diffusion layer 6. The catalyst layer 6 consists of a carbon fiber which is produced by oxidation polymerizing a compound having an aromatic ring to form a fibril-like polymer and by calcining the fibril-like polymer, a metal catalyst carried on the carbon fiber, and an ion conductive polymer impregnated in the carbon fiber. The catalyst layer 5 has a mass of ion conductive polymer at the upstream part larger than the mass of the ion conductive polymer at the downstream side in the supply of the oxidizer gas. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2008,JPO&INPIT |
