PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a loop topology detection and circumvention method in which a remote management unit promptly detects a loop in a network topology and circumvents the loop, communication apparatuses, a management unit, and a program. SOLUTION: The loop topology detection and circumvention method is based on a system having a plurality of communication apparatuses relaying layer 2 frames and a management unit for detecting a loop topology in the network. First, the management unit sends a trace request containing TTL (Time To Live) to the communication apparatus. Then, the communication apparatus sends a trace response containing a count of the received trace requests back to the management unit. The management unit decrements the TTL such that the count contained in all of the trace requests sent from the communication apparatuses equals to either one or two, and additionally repeats the above step. Then the management unit determines that any of the communication apparatuses that sent the trace request with the count of two contain the loop topology. COPYRIGHT: (C)2008,JPO&INPIT
