PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a humectant composition for a new type of skin care preparation for external use. SOLUTION: The invention relates to the humectant composition having an excellent moisture-retention effect, containing at least one member selected from a menthol derivative represented by general formula (1), (in the formula, R is an alkylene group having 2 to 5 carbon atoms which may be substituted with at least one member selected from the group consisting of methyl group and hydrox group, and n is an integer of 1 to 3), and at least one member selected from p-menthane-3,8-diol, and the invention provides the skin care preparation for external use containing the same.
