Disclosed is a method for easily isolating/purifying and separating/remov ing (2S,3R,4S)-4-hydroxyisoleucine with high purity and high yield. Specific ally disclosed is a method for purifying (2S,3R,4S)-4-hydroxyisoleucine or a chemically acceptable salt thereof, which comprises the following steps (a) , (b) and (c). (a) a step wherein (2S,3R,4S)-4-hydroxyisoleucine or a chemic ally acceptable salt thereof in a mixture is reacted with an aldehyde compou nd represented by the formula: Q-CHO (wherein Q represents an aryl group hav ing 6-14 carbon atoms, an alkyl group having 1-10 carbon atoms, a cycloalkyl group having 3-10 carbon atoms or a 5-10 membered heterocyclic group, any o f which groups may be substituted) or an equivalent thereof, and converted t o a compound represented by the following formula (1): [In the formula, Q is as defined above.] (b) a step for extracting the compound represented by th e formula (1) by using an organic solvent (c) a step for converting the comp ound represented by the formula (1) to (2S,3R,4S)-4-hydroxyisoleucine or a c hemically acceptable salt thereof
