The present invention provides a breath actuation mechanism for an aerosol generating device (201), comprising an air inlet, an air outlet (235) adapted to be connected to the airway of a patient, a variable-volume chamber (240) connected to the air outlet and having an initial volume, a valve arrangement associated with the air inlet, and having an initial closed state, and actuatable triggering means (245) responsive to evacuation of a definite volume of air from the chamber, wherein actuation of the triggering means opens the valve means thereby allowing a flow of air through the air inlet to the air outlet. Initially the inhalation proceeds essentially unimpeded until the whole of the definite volume is emptied. Hereby the lungs are slightly expanded and thus made ready for inhalation of an aerosol.
