PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader which avoids a failure of an optical system member or the like by fixing a reading unit when transportation, and further prevents deformation and damage of the reading unit or the like caused by turning on a power source of the image reader while the reading unit is fixed and using the image reader, with inexpensive and simple constitution. SOLUTION: The image reader 1 is equipped with a translucent original platen 52 on which an original is placed, and the reading unit 60 which is arranged below the original platen 52, moved in a horizontal direction, irradiates the original placed on the original platen 52 with light and reads the original with reflected light. The image reader 1 is equipped with a fixing member 70 for fixing the reading unit 60 at a predetermined position, and the fixing member 70 functions also as a switch which turns off the power source of a reader main body when the reading unit 60 is fixed, and turns on the power source of the reader main body when the reading unit 60 is not fixed.
