PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a wavelength variable light source capable of outputting variable wavelength light having high accuracy by a simple configuration. SOLUTION: The wavelength variable light source 1 has a gain element 12 and a wavelength variable reflector 18 and has also an etalon 15 and a beam splitter 16 in a laser resonator 20 formed of a low reflecting mirror 13 and an HR film 19. The wavelength variable light source 1 has a phase adjusting element 17 fitted in the laser resonator 20 to change a phase of a resonance wavelength. The wavelength variable light source 1 further has a wavelength-lock control section C1 which adjusts the phase of the resonance wavelength by adjusting the phase adjusting element 17 on the basis of a value PD1 of incident light monitored by the beam splitter 16 while adjusting the wavelength variable reflector 18 on the basis of a value PD2/PD1 as a ratio of a value PD2 of a reflected light to the value PD1 of the incident light and locking the resonance wavelength to a desired one by changing the resonance wavelength.
