A device and method for performing a test of semiconductor devices with an optical interface. In one embodiment, the device performs a test at a semiconductor device with an integrated self test function and with an optical interface. An optical transmitter and an optical receiver provide a system configured for returning an optical emission of the semiconductor device from the optical transmitter to the optical receiver of the semiconductor device.
