A method for controlling recording power of an optical disk player is provided to search recording power through OPC(optimum power control) when ±RW based media is loaded and determine the final recording power by carrying out overwrite in the data area, thereby maintaining stable recording performance. ID information recorded in a loaded disk is read(S203). A recording target modulation factor from a recording strategy, and recording power are checked(S205). After setting recording speed, the optimum recording power is searched(S207,S209). Overwrite is carried out repeatedly in a data area, using increased and reduced peripheral values in the optimum recording power(S211). The power with the best modulation factor is set as recording power(S213). After an area of carrying out the overwrite is erased by the set recording power, recording is carried out by recording power(S215,S217).
