A network storage system is provided to enable a general user having no knowledge for a standard protocol to use the system easily, transfer data efficiently in an environment having a remarkable difference between speeds of an intranet and an external Internet, and offer a network storage service efficiently in various kinds of network environments. A network connector(110) supports network connection with a client system. A standard protocol processor(121) receives a user request from the client system through a standard FTP(File Transfer Protocol) and transceives data according to the user request. A web-based protocol processor(122) receives the user request from the client system through a web-based FTP and transceives the data according to the user request. An authenticator(131) authenticates the user request, and transmits an authentication result to the standard or web-based protocol processor. A file system(140) generates, stores, and manages the data by receiving the user request from the standard and web-based protocol processors. A physical volume manager(152) manages access to a physical storage(160) and allocates an area storing the data in the physical storage. By being connected to a storage/share storing unit(172), a storage/share management unit(171) stores or shares data according to how the data is stored at storage/share storing unit.
