Hollow metal club head 1 having a face 2, crown 3, sole 4, side (5, fig. 1a) and hosel (6, fig. 1a) is formed by welding face plate 30 to body 10, and a central thickened region 20 is formed at the join between the face 2 and sole 4 by providing a thick part 20 on the face plate 30 prior to welding. The width W in the toe-heel direction of the thick part 20 may be 0.5 to 20mm, the average thickness of the face 2 may be 2.5 to 3.5mm, the maximum height H of the thick part 20 from the sole bottom surface may be 2.0 to 20mm, and the maximum length from the face surface 2 to the rear of the thick part 20 may be 3 to 35mm. The height of the thick part 20 may decrease toward the rear. The head may be formed of titanium or a titanium alloy, and may have a volume of 250 to 460cc. The Young's modulus of the metal forming the face plate may be lower than that of the metal forming the body. The face plate 20 may include an upper, rearward projecting part 31 which forms part of the crown 3. |
