Disclosed is a method for managing the cooling of an information handling system, such as a server or blade computer. The information handling system has a housing, such as a rack or cabinet, in which the processing elements or components of the system are placed. Placed inside the housing is a cooling fan near the processing elements to provide a cooling airflow. The fan is controlled by a management processor that selects the speed of the fan based on the environmental conditions detected and a cooling (or thermal) profile of the information handling system. The cooling profile of the system is retrieved by the management processor from a network location when a change to the processing elements or the hardware configuration in the housing is detected. The management processor may be the Baseboard Management Controller (BMC). |
