Energy efficient road lighting employing presence detection

A street lighting system is described that is used to illuminate a roadway and provides significant energy saving through predictive control of the illuminating lights. The system combines object presence detection means, communication means and control means. Predictive illumination is provided for objects passing along the path of the roadway by detecting said objects presence by one or more sensors and passing information to other remotely located control means to illuminate at least one street light in the path ahead.
