[Also in Group XXIX] A two-wheel lapping machine has a swivelling upper housing part with a drive to effect swivelling, the upper housing part and the fixed lower housing part being each provided with a seat for the reception of a truing tool. The lower lap wheel 4 is rotatably mounted in the fixed lower housing part 1 and the upper lap wheel 11 is rotatably mounted in an upper housing part 9 which can swivel on a vertical support 7 secured to the housing 1. The upper lap wheel 11 is vertically adjustable. The hub 14 of the upper lap wheel 11 has a seat 15, and the lower housing part 1 has a seat 18. The holder 16 of a truing tool 17, e.g. a diamond, can be received in either of the seats. With the holder 16 in the seat 15, swivelling of the housing part 9 effects truing of the lower lap wheel 4 and with the holder 16 in the seat 18, swivelling of the housing part 9 effects truing of the upper lap wheel 11. To effect the swivelling, the housing part 9 carries a spindle 26 on which is rotatable a pinion 28. Pinions 25, 27 are secured on the spindle 26. The spindle 26 is urged upwardly by a spring 24 but is moved downwardly, on starting a pump 47 to supply pressure medium to a cylinder 32, to bring pinions 28, 25 into mesh with a gear quadrant 23 fixed to the vertical support 7. Pinion 28 is always in mesh with a rack 30 having at its ends pistons 36, 37 and pinion 27 is always in mesh with a rack 29 having at its end pistons 34, 35. To swivel the housing part 9 in one direction, pressure medium from pump 47 is admitted, under control of distributing valve 46, to piston 36, thus moving rack 30 to rotate pinion 28 which rolls on gear 23 so that the part 9 swivels. Pressure medium displaced by piston 37 is admitted to the left of piston 34 and pressure medium displaced by piston 35 passes to exhaust through adjustable throttle valve 49. This prevents chatter and backlash in the gearing. The movement is reversed by actuating the valve 46. |
