A global positioning system having the rear side detection function is provided to reduce the cost spent in realizing a GPS signal guidance function and the rear side detection function by combining the GPS signal guidance function and the rear side detection function. A global positioning system having the rear side detection function comprises a GPS signal receiver(110) for receiving a GPS signal, an obstacle detection unit(130) for detecting an obstacle at a rear side and an output control unit(150). The output control unit controls an operation of the GPS signal receiver and the obstacle detection unit and outputs a result provided from the GPS signal receiver and the obstacle detection unit. The output control unit outputs a result provided from the GPS signal receiver in driving a vehicle equipped with the global positioning system having the rear side detection function.
