An image processing apparatus, an image processing method, a display device, and a projection type display device are provided to correct an image signal without increasing the size of a circuit or power consumption. An adding and overflow processing unit(4211) extracts upper bits of a certain bit width from an inputted image signal and generates correction-use bits. A flipflop(4213) controls timing at which the input signal is disposed in an interpolation calculation unit(4215). A gamma correction look-up table memory(4214) stores a gamma correction look-up table in which correction-use bits of upper bits of a certain bit width from an input signal of a certain gray level corresponds to gamma correction value data. The interpolation calculation unit performs linear interpolation based on output correction value data as well as output lower non-interpolation bits. A data selector(4216) selects one of a gamma correction-processed signal or an input signal which has not subject to gamma correction. The selected signal is outputted to a gamma fine adjustment processing unit(422). The gamma fine adjustment processing unit sets a plurality of M types of correction data according to a fixed gray scale of each input data to correspond to V-T(Voltage-Transmission) curved line characteristics.
