A secondary battery having a cathode active material with excess lithium in active site of the active material is provided to show more extended life-time of the battery and increase in capacity by comprising a cathode active material for reversely absorbing and discharging lithium ions, which contains excess lithium in an active site of the cathode active material after each of recharging/discharging cycles. The secondary battery consisting of anode, cathode and electrolyte has a cathode active material for reversely absorbing and discharging lithium ions, which contains excess lithium in an active site of the cathode active material when an anode active material is charged with lithium at all of active sites of the anode active material after each of recharging/discharging cycles. The battery is characterized in that an initial recharging/discharging efficiency of the cathode active material is greater than that of the anode active material; or irreversible capacity of the initial recharging/discharging of the cathode active material is controlled to be less than that of the initial recharging/discharging of the anode active material. |
