An image capturing apparatus and its method for capturing a still image are provided to improve picture quality of a still image and remove the necessity of the iris by storing images of odd and even fields in each vertical transmission resister to generate an image signal. A lens(100) images an optical image of a subject to an image capturing unit(110). The image capturing unit performs photoelectric transformation on the optical image formed through the lens into an electrical image signal. A signal processing unit(140) processes the photoelectric transformed image signal as a luminance signal and a color signal. A compressing unit(160) compresses the processed image signal. A storage unit(170) stores the compressed image signal. The image capturing unit includes two vertical transmission registers for storing an even field image and an odd field image in the storage unit.
