The method involves measuring applied load curve depending on the depth of penetration. The curve between applied load and depth of penetration is intrinsically identical for the material intended as a solid. The method uses topographic measurements of the track, the value of the hardness, or the youngs modulus to determine unequivocally that the two sets of properties actually correspond to indented material.
