[Also in Division G3] The feeding of an anti-foaming agent to a reaction vessel containing a liquid carrying a top layer of foam is controlled in dependence on the foam condition as measured by an electrical signal derived from the mechanical power required to break the foam layer, whereby the excessive formation of foam is prevented. As shown, apparatus for feeding an anti-foaming agent by way of a valve 7 and a feed line 6 to a reaction vessel 1 comprises a foam-breaking impeller 9a driven by a motor 4, an ammeter 11 for detecting the load current of the motor 4 and hence the mechanical resistance of the foam layer, and a relay 12 which is actuated to open the valve 7 when the load current increases by a predetermined amount, the pointer of ammeter 11 then closing a circuit to the relay 12. The impeller 13a for stirring the liquid 2 in the vessel I may be driven by a separate motor 4a, or if suitably proportioned, by the motor 4, Fig. 1 (not shown). |
