A broadcast receiver and a method for receiving an adaptive broadcast signal are provided to realize an adaptive broadcast by receiving contents, which are encoded in a bit rate suitable for a network speed of a user, from a service provider. Network environment information of a receiver and program selection information are transmitted to a service provider through a linked IP network(S62). At least one service, which is selected from available service information about a user-selected program, is transmitted from the service provider to the receiver, based on the network environment information(S64). The network environment information is network speed information.
