An apparatus and a method for displaying external input error message of a vehicle audio/video system are provided to prevent unnecessary error message from being displayed by separately setting up a general external input mode for inputting video and audio signals and an audio external input mode. An apparatus for displaying external input error message of an audio/video system for a vehicle comprises a video processing part(60), an audio processing part(70), and a control part. The video processing part outputs information for inputting a video signal by inspecting input of the video signal through a video signal input port of an external input port. The audio processing part outputs the information for inputting audio signals by inspecting input of each audio signal through audio signal input ports of the external input port. The control part displays the error messages on non-input video signal and audio signals by detecting non-input of the video signal and the audio signals through the input of the video signal and the audio signals.
