Process for the preparation of L-carnitine inner salt comprising the reduction with diborane, lithium borohydride, sodium borohydride, or with a mixed hydride of the COX2 group of a compound of formula (I), wherein said reduction is carried out at - 15 °C, and subsequent treatment with a base and then with trimethylamine. Also described are derivatives of succinic acid for use in the preparation of L-carnitine inner salt and their use.
