The method involves varying an opening/closing pattern of exhaust valves (20) and intake valves (22) of corresponding cylinders of an internal combustion engine functioning according to a four-phase cycle. One of the intake valves is closed during an intake phase (PMB ADM) and is opened during a part of a compression phase of the four-phase cycle. The intake valve is opened near a bottom dead center of the intake phase and is closed near a top dead center of a combustion phase (PMH COMB).
