PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recording method and a recorder which are based on an index arrangement realizing an image grade of high image quality. SOLUTION: An image processing method includes a process for replacing input image data quantized by a multi-valued level using a M×N index arrangement pattern as a pseud neutral-tone processing. The process has a plurality of the index arrangement patterns which differ, respectively, for each level of the input image data. The process includes a DUTY information acquisition process for acquiring the DUTY information of the input image data, an index arrangement pattern selection process for selecting the index arrangement pattern used for the replacing among the two or more index arrangement patterns; and a process for replacing the input image data using the index arrangement pattern selected in the dot arrangement pattern selection process.
