PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a timber drying method capable of finding out drying conditions capable of controlling cracking of a timber surface and/or internal cracking, and a timber drying method capable of efficiently drying timer while inhibiting the cracking on the timber surface and/or internal cracking. SOLUTION: In this timber drying method, a pair of displacement gauge fixing tools 6A, 6A (or 6B, 6B) are fixed to two side faces 10A, 10A adjacent to each other, of a square timber 10, and the square timber is dried while measuring displacement generated on the square timber during drying by a displacement gauge 7A (or 7B) fixed between the pair of displacement gauge fixing tools 6A, 6B (or 6B, 6B). In this timber drying method, the timber is preferably dried while controlling the drying conditions on the basis of a result of the measurement of displacement generated on the square timber, or in accordance with a drying schedule determined on the basis of the result of measurement of the displacement generated on the square timber to reduce the cracking of timber surface and/or internal cracking.
