<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform easily mutual authentication needed between external equipment such as a terminal, and an authentication apparatus without using a new authentication method. <P>SOLUTION: The authentication apparatus 100 comprises: an authentication means 1001 for performing authentication of the external equipment; an authentication code hold means 100 for holding an authentication code corresponding to the authentication method used by the authentication means 100; an IC card means 1006 for managing a memory area the apparatus has; and a mutual authentication means 1005 for performing mutual authentication with the IC card means 1006.
