PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a substrate for obtaining a leather-like sheet material excellent in appearance, hand and physical properties without inhibiting migration with an organic solvent-free polyurethane aqueous dispersion, and to provide a method for producing the same. SOLUTION: This artificial leather-like substrate comprising a nonwoven fabric prepared by interlacing ultra fine fibers having a single fiber fineness of 0.001 to 0.5 dtex and a self-emulsifiable polyurethane having a softening point of 70 to 150°C and contained in the nonwoven fabric is characterized in that the ultra fine fibers constituting the non-woven fabric are interlaced with each other, and the total weight of the polyurethane existing from the surface to 1/3 of the depth in the sheet thickness direction is 70 to 100 wt.% based on the total weight of the polyurethane existing in the whole body of the substrate.
