<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a continuously variable transmission constructed to combine a toroidal type continuously variable transmission 13 and planetary gear units so that the rotating direction of an output shaft 12 can be reversed in the process of a stopped condition as an input shaft 11 remains rotated in one direction to reduce power which passes through the toroidal type continuously variable transmission 13. <P>SOLUTION: Two sets of planetary gear units include a first planetary gear unit 21 and a second planetary gear unit 22. The first planetary gear unit 21 as one of them is provided between the input shaft 11 and the output shaft 12. The second planetary gear unit 22 is provided between the first planetary gear unit 21 and an output part between the input shaft 11 and the toroidal type continuously variable transmission 13.
