PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To shorten the time necessary for automatic focusing processing. SOLUTION: When a focusing position of a lens is specified for example, evaluated value data is calculated based on an image signal input to a sensor circuit through a lens while the lens is moved in steps and the focusing position is specified based on the value of the evaluated value data. At this point, the movement of the lens is controlled based on an origin position detected only once after the automatic focusing device is powered on according to its relative relation. Further, when the focusing position is specified while the lens 1 is moved in steps, the lens is moved to a specified position on a very close side (S401) and then continuously moved from the specified position on the very near side toward an infinite-distance side (S402, S403). Consequently, the time necessary for detecting the origin position and focusing times for images on very near sides which increase during practical use can be shortened.
