PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To keep a print head in a good state while maintaining the small quantity of ink consumed by a cleaning operation, even if a standby state continues. SOLUTION: In this head maintenance method, any one cleaning operation among the normal flushing operation of ejecting an ink liquid to the print head 21 with an ink nozzle from the ink nozzle, the small-quantity-of-ink flushing operation of ejecting the ink liquid from the ink nozzle in smaller quantities than in the normal flushing operation, and the suction and ejection operation of sucking in and ejecting the ink liquid from the ink nozzle is selectively performed depending on a set condition. An elapsed time after the completion of the cleaning operation is measured by a cleaning completion timer 53. When the elapsed time Tf, which is measured by the timer 53, reaches a predetermined time, a control part 52 performs the small-quantity-of-ink flushing operation by activating a drive control circuit 57 for a small-quantity-of-ink flushing mode, and resets the timer 53.
