PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a railway vehicle drive system that does not cause the lowering of an acceleration force even if driving an express or the like at high speed for a long distance, by using a requisite minimum power generator and with a small capacity of an energy storage device. SOLUTION: The system comprises the power generator; a first power converter that converts generated power; the storage device for storing power converted by the first power converter; a second power converter that alternately converts the output power of the first power converter, and the power of a motor that drives a vehicle; a train control device that controls the power generator, the first and the second power converters; and a driver's cab that outputs a drive command to the train control device. The train control device creates a curved line for the management of the storage device that shows a charging amount of the storage device at each speed determined by the capacity of the storage device, an engine output, and acceleration performance. In an operation other than braking and powering, the train control device determines the output of the power generator depending on whether or not the charging amount of the storage device is on the curved line for the management of the storage device.
