PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electrode for a high-pressure discharge lamp capable of relieving wear, thermal deformation and the like of an electrode tip, and of suppressing degradation of a life characteristic of the lamp due to excessive electrode temperature rise. SOLUTION: In this electrode for a discharge lamp, a covering member is wound around a rod-like electrode shaft by projecting the tip part of the electrode shaft, the projecting part of the electrode shaft from the covering member is heated and melted, and an electrode part having a diameter larger than that of the electrode shaft is formed by the melted part. The electrode for a discharge lamp is characterized in that the covering member 4 is formed into a hollow coil-like shape having a diameter nearly equal to the outside diameter of the electrode shaft by densely spirally winding a small-diameter wire of a high-melting-point material; a connection part where the coil-like covering member is screwed and wound to the electrode shaft 2 has a screw part of a circular groove having a diameter equal to the wire diameter of the covering member; the electrode part is formed by screwing the screw part of the electrode shaft 2 to the coil-like covering member 4 until the tip part is projected and by heating and melting the projected part; and the covering member in the non-melted part positioned behind the tip part is used as a heat radiation part.
