PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an observation device which displays a map image in a range which an observer requires, even after rotation of the map image. SOLUTION: The observation device is provided with a display panel 1 and is so configured that a display area of the display panel 1 is placed within a plane approximately parallel with an optical axis of an observation optical system. The observation device reads out map data in a prescribed range with an observation position acquired by a positioning system (a GPS antenna 4 and a MPU 13), as the center, from a map database and displays a map image based on the read-out data on the display panel. The observation device displays the map image with the observation position as the center of the display area or displays the map image more widely in an observation direction, in accordance with an operation signal from a display changeover switch 7. The observation device rotates the map image around the observation position on the map image so that an orientation of observation acquired by a gyro 3 is displayed upward on the display panel 1.
