A dough maker comprises in series a mixer 1 to which materials are fed in metered amounts, a feeding device 2 arranged for working the material with repeated compressions and expansions, and a further mixer or kneader 3. The mixer 1 comprises a rotatable shaft 12 having radial blades 13 successively displaced by 90 degrees; the feeding device 2 a rotatable screw mounted preferably eccentrically in a cylindrical casing (see Figs. 1a, 1b not shown) or two parallel intermeshing screws 23<SP>1</SP>, 23<SP>11</SP> in a lobed casing (see Fig. 2, not shown); and the mixer 3 a single shaft 32 in a cylindrical casing having internal deformations (see Fig. 3, not shown) or two parallel shafts 32<SP>1</SP>, 32<SP>11</SP> in a lobed casing 31, each shaft having oblique ellipsoidal blades 33 mounted round it in a helical path. The casing may be jacketed and the shaft and blades hollow for passage of heat exchange medium (see Figs. 5-8, not shown). The screws 23, 23<SP>1</SP> may be of variable pitch and contour; one may be a single and the other a double start screw. |
