PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new method for producing in high yield a 4-acetyl-1-benzyl-4-phenylpiperidine using inexpensive raw materials compared with conventional methods. SOLUTION: The method for producing the 4-acetyl-1-benzyl-4-phenylpiperidine of formula(3) or a salt thereof comprises reacting 4-cyano-1-benzyl-4-phenylpiperidine with a halogenomethylmagnesium followed by reacting the reaction product with water in the presence of an acid.
